About me
Building has always been part of who I am. It started with Lego, huts and rafts, and later evolved into drawings, models and buildings. That urge to imagine something and then figure out how to make it real is still at the heart of what attracts me to architecture.
I do not see architecture as an isolated image, but as an interplay between idea, place, technology, material and use. A strong design should not only convince on paper, but also stand up to reality. That is where it becomes interesting: when a concept meets structure, regulations, installations, budget and construction, and a solution has to be found without losing the strength of the original idea.
My background in both building engineering and architecture fits naturally with that approach. After studying Building Engineering in Zwolle, I continued with Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences at TU Delft. Within the Complex Projects studio, I graduated with a proposal for a future Hyperloop Station in Amsterdam Zuidoost — a project that brought together architecture, infrastructure, mobility and technology on a large scale. That combination of design and complexity has stayed with me ever since.
Approach & vision
In my work, I like moving between different scales. One moment it is about the overall gesture or spatial logic of a building, the next about a junction, material choice or technical detail that ultimately determines whether the design truly works. I find it especially rewarding to connect those different worlds and, together with engineers, consultants, clients and contractors, turn them into a stronger whole.
I am critical and precise, sometimes perhaps a little too much so, but always because I believe quality comes from attention. At the same time, I do not believe in complexity for its own sake. A design can be ambitious, but in the end it should feel clear and natural.
My curiosity does not stop at architecture. Travel, landscape, cities, sailing, technology, infrastructure and craftsmanship all influence the way I look at design. Often, it is exactly those things outside architecture that lead to unexpected ideas.
What ultimately drives me is the ambition to create architecture with character: designs that feel almost self-evident once they are built, while concealing a great deal of thought, judgement and development beneath the surface.
