Apartment Renovation, Amsterdam

A characterful period apartment in Amsterdam — a rough diamond — has been completely transformed. The former student flat was given a new layout and rebuilt from floor to ceiling: wiring, pipework, insulation, floors and ceilings, complete with a detailed lighting plan.

Original details were kept or restored wherever possible: mouldings around doors and windows, skirting boards, radiator casings and classic ironmongery. The steel-framed glass wall in the living room is a modern reading of the original ensuite doors — a room divider and a design object in one, with slender profiles and discreet handles.

As my own client I went through the entire process: from preliminary design and strip-out to technical and construction design — including a detailed setting-out plan in which the herringbone pattern of the floor aligns exactly with the walls and the kitchen.
